Michael Nyman symphony marks Hillsborough disaster
LONDON (AP) Composer Michael Nyman has been commissioned to write a symphony commemorating 96 Liverpool soccer fans crushed to death in Britain's worst sports stadium disaster.
''Symphony No. 11: Hillsborough Memorial'' includes the names of those who died during an April 1989 match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest at Sheffield's Hillsborough Stadium.
Organizers of the Liverpool Biennial arts festival say the work will be performed July 5 at Liverpool Cathedral by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.
Mayor Joe Anderson said Wednesday it was ''a fantastic example of art being used to help shine a light on the dignity and bravery of those who have strived for justice for the 96.''
Victims' families have fought to prove that mistakes by authorities were responsible for the deaths. A coroner is holding new inquests.
