Mexico, Peru draw 0-0 in California

Peru goalkeeper Jose Carvallo stopped a second-half penalty to help preserve a 0-0 draw with Mexico in a friendly Wednesday night.

Mexico goalkeeper Jesus Corona also made several key saves in the second half as Peru created the more dangerous chances. Mexico's penalty was its only shot on goal, but Carvallo kept out Angel Reyna's spot kick in the 70th minute.

The game drew a raucous, mostly pro-Mexico crowd of 46,288 that waved red, white and green flags and blew horns long before the match began at Candlestick Park.

Not even the absence of four of Mexico's top players, including Javier Hernandez, dulled the pre-game celebrations.

Without his top four players, Mexico coach Jose de la Torre had hoped to use the game as a platform for some of the team's lesser known players.

He used a squad made up of players solely from the Mexican League, a vastly different lineup than the one that drew the United States 1-1 in March.

Instead, it was another disappointing result for Mexico, which has not been as impressive as expected in the final qualifying round for the 2014 World Cup.

Peru, ranked 32nd by FIFA, missed it best chance in the first half when Corona stopped Luis Advincula's header in the 20th minute.

Mexico's Luis Montes took a long pass and dribbled around Carvallo after the goalkeeper tripped but his shot hit the right sidenetting. Pablo Barrera's free kick from just outside the box later in the half sailed out of bounds.

Montes also missed a shot from inside the box in the 83rd minute.

This was the second stop on Mexico's tour in the United States. The team drew 1-1 with Denmark in Phoenix on Jan. 30 and will face Nigeria on May 31 in Houston.
