Mexico midfielder Marco Fabian joins Eintracht Frankfurt

Mexico midfielder Marco Fabián has agreed to leave Chivas Guadalajara to sign with Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt in a reported $4 million deal.

Chivas announced Fabián’s transfer to Germany on Friday morning and finally ended a protracted transfer chase in the process.

Fabián generated significant European interest after playing a part in Mexico’s victory at the 2012 Olympics in London and securing a place in the Mexico squad for the World Cup last summer.

Several reported moves fell through over the past few years even as Fabian spent a brief spell on loan at Cruz Azul, while the 26-year-old Chivas academy product reportedly received interest from MLS expansion team Atlanta United FC ahead of its debut in 2017.

Eintracht eventually procured Fabián’s signature in a bid to reinforce the attacking options available to manager Armin Veh after the winter break. Veh’s relegation-threatened side is in desperate need of reinforcements after securing just 14 points in the first 16 matches. The comprehensive 4-1 defeat to Borussia Dortmund on Sunday underscored the work ahead to stave off the drop.

Fabián’s versatility -- he can feature in the wide areas or serve as a second striker -- presents him with an opportunity to make an impact, though he must adjust quickly to the demands of the Bundesliga. He projects a possible choice on the left flank or as the most advanced player in the midfield three in Veh’s 4-2-3-1 setup.

The move also continues a busy few weeks for Chivas in the transfer market. Mexico midfielder Carlos Peña is now in the fold after completing a lucrative move from Club León earlier this month. Promising prospect Orbelin Pineda is also in the frame after sealing a move from Querétaro, while Carlos Fierro is now with Gallos Blancos in a bid to obtain regular first-team football.
