Memo Ochoa says many Mexico players don't like Juan Carlos Osorio's rotation
Mexico manager Juan Carlos Osorio has rotated players in and out of starting lineups ever since taking over as El Tri boss, and goalkeeper Guillermo "Memo" Ochoa told Fox Sports Mexico that many of those players do not like the rotation.
"It's a complicated issue, we have to respect what the coach asks and what he wants to do, but look, it is clear that many do not like it," Ochoa said.
Ochoa is one of the players who has been part of Osorio's rotation. He, Jose Corona and Alfredo Talavera have all spent time as Mexico's No. 1 under Osorio, and at Copa America Centenario, each of them started one group stage match. Ochoa then got the nod for the quarterfinal match, which Mexico lost, 7-1.
The rotation hasn't been limited to goalkeepers. Osorio has made major changes to his team for almost every match in charge of Mexico.
It's unlikely that Osorio goes away from his rotation. That type of management, where he picks his team specifically to counter what the opponent is doing after intense scouting and game-planning, has been at the core of his career and approach to the job. That was the case long before he took the Mexico job and is unlikely to ever change. While he may dial back on it some, Osorio will always lean heavily on his ability to change the team and adjust to who he is playing.
Now that Ochoa has gone public with his concerns, and those of his teammates, it will be worth watching if his place in the team changes or if the way the team responds to Osorio changes. Of course, winning cures all and if El Tri get back to winning, the critics will probably fade. But any losses or struggles will only make things harder on Osorio and his approach, from outside and inside the team.
