McCarthy shrugs off speculation
James McCarthy has committed his future to Wigan amid reports he is attracting admiring glances from the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool.
The talented 19-year-old Republic of Ireland international joined the Latics from Hamilton Academical last summer, arriving in the Premier League with a glowing reputation.
Roberto Martinez was wary of asking for too much, too soon from the youngster and has eased McCarthy into the fold at the DW Stadium.
He is, however, now a firm fixture in Wigan's first-team plans and has impressed with a number of eye-catching displays.
His rapid progress is rumoured to be interesting Arsenal while Liverpool, who missed out on his signature last year, also remain keen.
McCarthy, though, is keeping his feet on the ground and insists his sole focus at present is on life with Latics.
He said: "It's great to be tipped to go places, but I'm not getting carried away. I'm happy at Wigan and I have a four-year contract."
McCarthy has enjoyed a remarkable 12 months, graduating from SPL star of tomorrow to senior international.
He made his Wigan debut against Manchester United, and his Republic of Ireland bow against Brazil, and the 19-year-old admits things could not really have gone much better.
"It's been a brilliant season for me," he added.
"To be making my debut in the Premier League against United and then my debut for Ireland against Brazil - a dream come true."
