Martinez eyes cup tie break

Martinez treated his squad to the ATP World Tour Finals in London as part of a four-day stay on the outskirts of the capital between Saturday's Premier League match at West Ham and Tuesday night's League Cup quarter-final at the Emirates Stadium. And the face-off between the men considered by some to be the two best tennis players of all time proved the perfect pick-me-up from Wigan's 3-1 defeat at Upton Park, which saw them sucked to within two points of the foot of the table. Martinez said: "It's inspiring, I think, when you go and watch the two most talented tennis players in the world at the moment. "You can see that the margin of success and failure, they are very, very little. "But it's a fascinating experience to have from the outside, because it can inspire you to be a better, strong individual." Martinez reckons his side will face the footballing equivalent of Federer in Arsene Wenger's Arsenal. "I think Federer and Arsenal is a fair comparison," he said. "Technically as good as anything, superb to watch." Martinez wants Wigan to be just as easy on the eye but is also demanding they show the kind of never-say-die attitude of his compatriot and world number one Nadal. The Spaniard said: "We've been accused in the past as well of maybe being too expansive and wanting to play, and that you cannot stay in the Premier League trying to play football." He added: "I think it's not about styles; it doesn't matter what style you use. "It's just that toughness, that winning mentality and that's something we've got individually and now we need to develop that as a team." Arsenal have been accused of lacking mental toughness this season, especially at home, where they have already been beaten three times in the league. Martinez said: "What is quite clear is that it is a young group and a new group as well. "Sometimes, those are the experiences that you need to get through to fulfil your potential, and I see that clearly." Wigan capitalised on Arsenal's weaknesses in their last meeting in April, scoring three times in an incredible final 10 minutes to win 3-2 at the DW Stadium. "The result we had against Arsenal last year was completely different," Martinez said. "It was in the league, we were playing at home. "And it was one of the best finishes we had in the league. It was a great occasion." They also stunned the Gunners to reach the League Cup final in their maiden top-flight campaign almost five years ago. "It was one of the best moments in our club's history," said Martinez, who plans to emulate that feat on Tuesday evening.
