Mario Balotelli had some bizarre bonuses in his Liverpool contract

For most of us, not spitting at people at work is an unspoken expectation. Not being offensive and attacking people is just, you know, part of everyday life.

But Mario Balotelli has always done things his own way. And that’s apparently why his contract with Liverpool included some rather strange bonus clauses, offering him rewards for the way most people behave for free.

According to a Sunday Times report, Balotelli was entitled to a £1 million bonus if he didn’t get ejected from the field for violent conduct, which includes spitting at an opponent or using offensive, abusive language three times in a season. Yep, that’s right, he could be ejected twice for spitting at someone and still receive the £1 million bonus, which it appears he did.

Balotelli’s contract was generous in other ways, as he earned bonuses for doing what he was expected to do as a striker. He earned salary of £85,000 a week, but on top of that, he would be paid £50,000 per goal after his fifth goal. However, since Balotelli only scored one goal in his stint with the club from 2014 to 2016, that clause ended up not mattering.

The Sunday Times is one of several newspapers in Europe that has been combing through a huge trove of contracts of top soccer stars provided by the website Football Leaks. Those leaks have already included allegations that Cristiano Ronaldo dodged paying taxes.

The Sunday Times found many more oddities in player contracts, like the one for former Liverpool defender Daniel Agger. When he signed for Brondby in 2014, he was entitled to a prominent pitch-side ad for all home games. He used it to promote a sewage company called KloAgger, which he co-owns.

As reporters continue to go through the two terabytes of data in the documents breach, there’s bound to be more bizarre contract clauses that get exposed, but so far, Balotelli’s are sure the top head-scratcher.
