Manchester United director will stand for election for FIFA vice president

LONDON (AP) Manchester United director David Gill will stand for election to become a FIFA vice president next year.

Gill, who stepped down as United chief executive in 2013, already sits on UEFA's executive committee and is a vice chairman of the English Football Association.

Britain has a guaranteed FIFA vice presidency, but for the first time next year it will be chosen by all UEFA members and not chosen by the four home nations alone.

At the FIFA Congress in May, Gill is looking to succeed Jim Boyce, the Northern Irishman who has served as a vice president in world football since 2011.

Gill says he wants to ''use my candidacy to drive a debate for continued reform.''

He could face rival bids from Scottish and Welsh officials.
