Manchester City Women: Closing in on the WSL Title

Only two matches remain in the 2016 season with Manchester City Women on the chance at clinching the league and cup double.

Overshadowed this year by the men’s first team and the arrival of Pep Guardiola, MCW are on the edge of completing their best season ever. With one league match and a cup final ahead over the next two months Manchester City Women are two positive results from clinching the double.

WSL Update

City Women have won a league title before – just not the top division. Back in the 2011-12 season on their way up to the top flight they won the Women’s Premier League Northern Division. That season they won 13 matches and finished 5 points clear at the top. That success and the promotion to the Northern Division was the launch point for a journey almost complete.

After 14 matches complete from a season set of 16, Manchester City Women sit 7 points clear of second place Chelsea. On September 25th those two sides are set to square off in a match that could decide the season. A win or a draw would City claim the WSL title with one game left to play.

While nothing is certain they are the clear favorites to win against Chelsea and earn their first ever WSL title. After finishing runners-up last season to Chelsea they will make the perfect opponent to close the door on.

Continental Tyres Cup Update

While still over a month away and the league as the focus, City must be dreaming of the double. On October 2nd, 2016 MCW will take on Birmingham City in the Cup Final. Manchester City claimed their first Cup victory back in 2014 topping Arsenal 1-0. That victory actually marked the only time a club other than Arsenal had won the Cup.

For Birmingham City this will be their third trip to the final and falling to Arsenal in 2011 and 2012. Fans can still get tickets to the Cup Final here.
