Lineker: Spurs have bright future

He also reckons Gareth Bale could be one of the greats of world football. Lineker, who spent three years at Tottenham, claimed Redknapp's side had set the Champions League alight with stunning wins over Inter Milan and Werder Bremen. The former England striker said: "Spurs are doing brilliantly. They need to be a bit more resilient and stronger but they have the potential to become one of the great Spurs sides if they can make themselves a little harder to penetrate. "It's their first go in the Champions League and they have set the competition alight in their attitude and the way they've played. "They have got a lot of qualities, they have a terrific squad and a big squad, a lot of good players and I think Harry is right that they are two or three short of challenging for honours." Bale has been the star for Spurs this season and Lineker said the attention given to the Wales international has been fully deserved. "Bale could be potentially a truly great player. He can do it all," said Lineker. "He can run all day and he's quick, which is an unusual combination, he's powerful, his delivery is very precise, he takes all the dead balls, got a wonderful left foot, he's competitive, works hard, seems to have a good head on his shoulders. "If he's fortunate to avoid injury he could be one of the world's best." Lineker was speaking at Wembley Stadium at the launch of the venue of the Champions League final in May. Next week he will be in Zurich to support England's 2018 World Cup bid, and he believes there will be no better place for the players to experience the tournament. He added: "I would go along the lines of what will be the best thing for football, and I think that would be our bid. If you ask the players where they would want to play a World Cup in 2018 they would say our country. "A lot of World Cups suffer because of the conditions and we would have perfect conditions. Our weather is not great but it is for football. "You don't have to deal with heat, altitude, you have great conditions, great pitches, grounds where the stands are right on top of the pitch which creates the atmosphere that players love to play in. "Why do you think so many players love coming to play here? Not just for the financial element but because it is such a buzz playing here."
