Leverkusen edges Real Sociedad in Champions League
Jens Hegeler scored with a free kick in injury time to put Bayer Leverkusen's Champions League's campaign back on track with a 2-1 victory over Real Sociedad on Wednesday.
Hegeler came on in the 85th and drilled a free kick from about 20 yards out in the second minute of injury time, curling the ball over a three-man wall into the upper right corner of Claudio Bravo's goal.
''I think it's my first free kick goal in a match,'' Hegeler said.
Simon Rolfes scored for Leverkusen in first-half stoppage time. The captain rose above the defense and connected with a header that was parried by Barvo, then pounced on the rebound to score.
Carlos Vela equalized in the 51st, knocking in the rebound after his penalty had been parried by Leverkusen's goalkeeper Bernd Leno.
Leno had kept Leverkusen in the match with several good saves in the second half.
Leverkusen lost its opening match 4-2 at Manchester United and is now sitting third in Group A.
United and Shakhtar Donetsk had a 1-1 draw in the other Group match on Wednesday and both teams have four points from two matches.
