Leverkusen captain Simon Rolfes requires operation on ankle
LEVERKUSEN, Germany --
Bayer Leverkusen captain Simon Rolfes needs an operation for a torn ligament in his right ankle.
Leverkusen says on its website that its medical staff decided surgery was necessary after the 32-year-old midfielder was injured in a tussle for the ball during a 4-2 Bundesliga win over Hertha Berlin on Saturday. He's expected to be out for several weeks.
Rolfes says, "Of course it's very annoying for me but I'll do all I can to be back on the pitch as quickly as possible."
The player started all five competitive games under new coach Roger Schmidt this season. Leverkusen won all of them and is on a seven-game winning run across all competitions.
