Klinsmann summons another college star to USMNT January camp

United States coach Jurgen Klinsmann called former Stanford fullback Brandon Vincent into the national team for the first time as part of a series of squad changes for the annual January camp.

Vincent is one of four additions to the 25-man squad as Klinsmann runs the rule over senior and Olympic team candidates ahead of the friendlies against Iceland (Jan. 31) and Canada (Jan. 5).

San Jose Earthquakes goalkeeper David Bingham, D.C. United defender Steven Birnbaum and unattached midfielder Perry Kitchen also received invitations to join the squad when it opens camp in southern California on Monday.

The quartet of players also compensates for the injury-related absences of Olympic stalwarts Fatai Alashe and Marc Pelosi. Alashe is ruled out with a groin injury, while Pelosi is suffering from tendinitis.

Cardinal senior fullback Vincent signed a contract with MLS earlier this week ahead of the MLS SuperDraft next Thursday. The left back is expected to leave the MLS Player Combine in Lauderhill, Florida in order to report to camp by Monday morning. He joins former Stanford teammate Jordan Morris as part of this squad.

Bingham is included after FC Dallas goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez decided to join Mexico’s under-23 camp this week. Gonzalez -- a Mexico youth international who holds dual citizenship -- initially planned to attend the U.S. camp, but he altered course earlier this week and decided to remain with El Tri instead.

Klinsmann also left room for further changes ahead of the two friendlies this month after noting he planned to use this camp for identification purposes ahead of the Copa América Centenario and the Olympic playoff against Colombia later tis year.
