Kaboul completes Sunderland transfer move from Tottenham

Tottenham defender Younes Kaboul has completed his move to Sunderland after signing a four-year deal.

The 29-year-old, who was a target for former Black Cats boss Roy Keane seven years ago, has joined the club for an undisclosed fee after traveling to Wearside for a medical on Thursday.

Kaboul said: "I'm delighted to be a Sunderland player and it's an honor to join this club. I would like to thank [sporting director] Lee Congerton and the head coach [Dick Advocaat] for making this move possible, and I can't wait to start playing for the Sunderland supporters."

Kaboul is Advocaat's fourth summer signing to date, following in the footsteps of Sebastian Coates, Adam Matthews and Jeremain Lens, and the 67-year-old Dutchman was delighted to have got him.

He said: "He is a very experienced player, which is what we need. He has shown that in his time at Spurs and he will be a very good addition to our squad."

Kaboul's capture completed a good 24 fours for Congerton, who has been busy all summer trying to land Advocaat's targets.

The sporting director said: "In Younes, we have signed an established Premier League player with pace and power at the back, which are qualities required in the modern game. We're pleased that he's agreed to join the club and he will bring good competition to the squad."

The Frenchman was first linked with Sunderland in 2008 when they offered £23million to Spurs for Kaboul, Pascal Chimbonda, Teemu Tainio and Steed Malbranque, but he was the only member of the quartet to reject the opportunity.

At the time, his agent Rudy Raba was quoted as saying: "Younes wouldn't join Sunderland even if there was an earthquake. We have more interesting options than Sunderland. Don't even think about it."

Meanwhile, defender Santiago Vergini has left the club on a season-long loan deal to Primera Division outfit Getafe.

A statement said: "Sunderland AFC defender Santiago Vergini has joined Spanish La Liga side Getafe CF on a season-long loan deal with a view to a permanent transfer. The 26-year-old Argentine arrived on an initial loan deal in 2014, going on to make 51 appearances in 18 months on Wearside."
