Jose Mourinho is off to just as bad a start at Manchester United as David Moyes
David Moyes' one season at Manchester United was an unmitigated disaster. He took over a team that had just won the Premier League title and led them out of the top four. They did little to inspire and were generally a bore to watch. There was nothing to be happy about and it started from the beginning, with just four wins and two draws from their first nine matches.
That 4-2-3 record? It's the same record Jose Mourinho has in his first nine matches at Manchester United.
Mourinho was hailed as the man to turn things around at Old Trafford -- someone who could return them to greatness after three underwhelming seasons, first by Moyes and then by Louis van Gaal. Except his Red Devils look just as inept as the teams of the last thee years.
And Mourinho spent a lot of money to put together this team. He broke the world transfer record for Paul Pogba, shelled out big money for Eric Bailly, handed Zlatan Ibrahimovic big wages and wrote the fat check for Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who can't get off the bench.
It's not as if Mourinho is working with no talent, which was an excuse Moyes had. That United team made Marouane Fellaini and Juan Mata their only signings of note to a team that was filled with holes. You can laugh at Moyes' decision to spend £27.5 million on Fellaini, but when you look at the squad, you can see why they struggled to win. That's not as clear with Mourinho, who has a team that is hardly ideal, but should be better than they have been.
So what now for Mourinho? He's going to face heat after the embarrassment at Chelsea, but this team is hardly doomed. After all, the talent is there and, for all the talk about whether Mourinho still has "it," he did win the Premier League just two years ago. But matching the start of David Freaking Moyes, is tough to swallow. Almost as tough as 4-0.
