Javi Martinez signs with Bilbao until 2016

Athletic Bilbao midfielder Javi Martinez has agreed to a two-year contract extension that will keep him at the topflight Spanish team until the end of 2015-16 season.

The club announced on Wednesday that the Spanish international's transfer clause was now ?40 million ($57 million).

The 22-year-old World Cup winner has been with the club since the beginning of the 2006-07 season.

This season, Martinez has helped the team claim a spot in next season's Europa League.
