Group considers buying Birmingham City

The Hong Kong-based owner of Birmingham City says it has been approached by a group that wants to buy the English Championship club.

Birmingham International Holdings Ltd. said in a brief statement Friday that its lawyers were in touch with the group, led by a sports management company, to clarify the offer.

Team owner Carson Yeung is scheduled to go on trial for money laundering in April. The club has said the charges are unrelated to the company or the team. Yeung bought the club in October 2009 for 81.5 million pounds (then $130 million) following a protracted takeover battle.

Two other prospective buyers had approached the club in October.

The team won the 2011 League Cup but was relegated from the Premier League later that season.
