Grenade kills, injures fans watching African Cup of Nations match

CONAKRY, Guinea -- Authorities in the West African nation of Guinea say one person is dead and three others seriously wounded after someone threw a grenade into a crowd of people watching a televised soccer match.

The fans were injured as they watched Guinea's national team play Côte d'Ivoire at the African Cup of Nations tournament under way in Equatorial Guinea.

Mamadou Alpha Barry, national police spokesman, said the violence took place around the time Côte d'Ivoire scored an equalizing goal in the game that ended 1-1. The person who launched the grenade also was seriously wounded, he said.

Other residents in the neighborhood said there were three dead, though police only confirmed one fatality.
