German tax inspectors investigate referees

The German football federation says tax investigators have visited its headquarters due to suspicions that referees may have failed to pay tax properly on their income.

The federation said the officials visited Monday to view documents on referees.

It didn't provide further details but says the federation itself is not accused of any wrongdoing.

General secretary Wolfgang Niersbach says the federation will support the investigation and stresses that it's up to every referee to ensure that he pays the proper taxes.
