Gerard Pique Isn't Ruling Out an MLS Move
Gerard Pique has been a stalwart of Barcelona’s defense for many years. However, he isn’t ruling out a move to the MLS before he retires.
Major League Soccer (MLS) has been growing at a rapid rate in the United States for the last few years. Many of the worlds most famous footballers have played in the MLS for the last few seasons too. This includes former Barcelona and current New York City FC star David Villa, his teammate and Chelsea legend Frank Lampard, and another Chelsea legend and Montreal Impact star Didier Drogba. These are a few of the legends that currently play in the MLS.
Gerard Pique could be one of the next European stars to join the ranks of the MLS soon. In an interview with Pelayo, he stated that he’s interested in a move to the MLS before his retirement from the game. He also considered the Chinese Super League, another league that is also growing fast. However, he prefers the MLS over China and explained his reasons why in the interview.
“Both the leagues are growing, although with different models,” the 29-year-old Spaniard said. “I read that MLS is the league with the seventh-highest attendance, after the five big European leagues and another [league] in sixth. The fans are becoming more hooked on football all the time in the United States. I don’t think I’d go to China, but the U.S., let’s see. I’ve always said I’d like to retire at Barca, but it would be an attractive option for a few years, as long as I have the appetite to continue playing football.”
More from Everything Barca
According to these words, Pique is strongly considering this idea. He’s already familiar with playing in the USA since Barca have played in the USA many times over the years. There would likely have to be a strong offer from an MLS team for his services. Also, he would need to still have the same desire to play football as he does at Barca currently.

If Pique does make the move to the United States, he would be included on the long line of talented European stars that made the move. However, the central defender still has a few great years left in him for Barca. Obviously Gerard Pique is a great defender and every MLS team would be better with him on the pitch. In the future, things and opinions can change, so as of right now, we don’t know if Pique will make the move. What we know is Pique is still valuable to Barca’s success and he’ll be important in the months to come.
