France's defense is falling apart, but they may get a boost ahead of the Euros
France has a bit of a problem heading into the Euros: they're running out of defenders.
The team may be stacked on paper, but injuries to Raphael Varane, Jeremy Mathieu and Kurt Zouma have decimated the center of their defense. All of a sudden, Les Bleus may have a problem heading into a tournament that they are hosting and had high hopes for. But they may have been given a boost on Saturday.
UEFA has chosen not to extend the suspension handed down to Mamdou Sakho, making him eligible to play in the Euros. Sakho was provisionally suspended 30 days for doping on April 28, with UEFA opening an investigation that could have extended the ban. However they have opted not to do so, meaning that as of Saturday, Sakho is clear to play again.
Sakho was not included on France's original roster for the Euros, but that was before UEFA's ruling and before both Varane and Mathieu went down with injuries. Now that he is in the clear and France desperately need help at the back, Didier Dechamps could add him to the squad.
France are also missing Karim Benzema up top in the wake of his allegedly blackmailing teammate Mathieu Valbuena, but they do have Olivier Giroud to step in. With a stacked midfield led by Paul Pogba and Antoine Griezmann, not to mention Hugo Lloris in goal, many picked France to win the Euros on home soil. But the defense could be what lets them down, now that both Varane and Mathieu are out. Getting Sakho back into the team, even if he does have his issues, could help put them back on track to capture the continental crown.
