Fernando Torres suffers 'traumatic brain injury' in match, taken to hospital

Fernando Torres suffered what Atletico Madrid called a "traumatic brain injury" in the team's 1-1 draw with Deportivo la Coruna on Thursday. The striker was taken to the hospital, where he will remain for the night.

The club said Torres was stable and conscious but will stay under observation before undergoing tests on Friday.

"Thank you to everyone for worrying about me and for your messages of support," Torres said on Twitter from the hospital. "It was only a scare. I hope to be back very soon!"

Torres was injured when he challenged for a ball in the air and collided with an opponent. He was knocked over and hit the ground hard. Medics rushed onto the field to tend to Torres, who was taken off the pitch by stretcher and in a neck brace.

The Atletico Madrid players were shaken up by Torres' injury. Some were unable to look, while others cried. Be warned that it's graphic, but you can view video of the injury here.

The match ended in a 1-1 draw, but teammate Antoine Griezmann expressed the result wasn't the primary concern.

"In the end the result doesn't mean anything," Griezmann said. "We just want to know how Fernando is doing and we hope that he will be with us again soon."

Atletico Madrid have released no other details on Torres' injury, nor is there a timeline for recovery.
