Empoli cruise past Genoa; Mesina pushes Bologna forward

Empoli beat Genoa 2-0 in Serie A on Saturday, while title-chasing Inter Milan had a chance to move provisionally top of the table when it played Palermo later.

There were early chances for both teams but Empoli broke the deadlock a minute from halftime. Manuel Pucciarelli couldn't get on the end of a cross from Piotr Zielinski on the left flank but Rade Krunic was there to slot in at the back post for his first Serie A goal.

Zielinski got on the scoresheet himself shortly before the hour, heading in the rebound after Massimo Maccarone hit the bar. Inter Milan can move two points clear of Fiorentina ahead of the Tuscan side's match at home to second-placed Roma Sunday.

Carpi 1 Bologna 2

Adam Mesina grabbed a last-gasp winner as Bologna leapfrogged Carp 2-1, who replaced them at the foot of Serie A.

The battle of the league's bottom two teams was tipping in the home side's favor when Gaetano Letizia stabbed home from close-range after Marco Boriello's touch forward.

But Lorenzo Lollo was dismissed for a second yellow card before half-time, changing the complexion of the game.

Daniele Gastaldello leveled two minutes into the second half after Luca Rizzo's drive came back off the post and Mesina poached the decisive goal in the 90th minute.

He arrived unmarked at the far post the convert Franco Brienza's teasing cross.
