Dynamo Kiev gets empty stadium order for racist fan attacks
NYON, Switzerland --
UEFA ordered Dynamo Kiev to play two home games in an empty stadium after racist attacks on fans at a Champions League match.
A third closed-door match sanction is suspended for three probationary years, UEFA said on Wednesday.
Dynamo, whose former president Hrigoriy Surkis is a UEFA vice president, was also fined 100,000 euros ($106,000).
Dynamo fans attacked at least eight fans in a home section of the Olympic Stadium during a game against Chelsea on Oct. 20.
Most of the victims were black, and some were white who tried to protect the black fans.
UEFA's anti-discrimination monitoring partner, Fare, which sends observers to major European games, captured video of four black men being chased through the crowd.
Stadium security staff did not intervene as some fans were caught and beaten, as were white men who tried to help.
One of the fans attacked was a 21-year-old student from Congo, who spent one week in a hospital being treated for head and nose injuries.
Dynamo will play in an empty stadium against Maccabi Tel Aviv on Dec. 9.
The second closed-door match will be in the Champions League round of 16 or Europa League round of 32 next year.
The sanction is the Ukrainian champion's second from UEFA for racism this year.
In March, UEFA fined Dynamo and closed part of the stadium for racist fan behavior at a Europa League game against Everton.
