Doctors: Valdivia out for the year

Palmeiras doctors say Chile midfielder Jorge Valdivia has a left leg muscle injury that will likely keep him sidelined for the rest of the year.

Valdivia had been playing sparingly since rejoining the Brazilian club after the World Cup because of a lingering thigh injury, and exams on Friday showed that he sustained a slightly more serious ailment on the same leg last Wednesday.

Palmeiras doctor Rubens Sampaio says the new injury will likely keep Valdivia out of action for up to four weeks.

The injury came in Palmeiras' 2-0 win over Atletico Mineiro in the Copa Sudamericana. Valdivia started the match but was substituted in the 15th minute.

Palmeiras, coached by Luiz Felipe Scolari, is in the semifinals of the South American competition.
