Del Neri wants new Juventus mindset

New Juventus coach Luigi Del Neri has said he wants to instill a "winning mentality" in his new team.

Del Neri signed a two-year deal with Juventus on Wednesday and was officially unveiled on Thursday, along with new president Andrea Agnelli and director general Giuseppe Moratta.

"I want to build a team with a definite identity, that doesn't change depending on which team it is playing," Del Neri said. "We want to return to the level that Juventus has always played throughout its century and recreate a winning mentality."

This season Del Neri led Sampdoria to fourth place in the Serie A and a berth in the Champions League qualification rounds.

Juventus by contrast struggled after Ciro Ferrara was replaced as coach by Alberto Zaccheroni. It eventually scraped into the Europa League by finishing seventh in the league, but only because Inter Milan won the league and Italian Cup double.

In the Champions League, Juventus was knocked out at the group stage and was then beaten by Fulham in the Europa League round of 16, despite leading the tie 4-1 at one stage.

Juventus has still to fully recover from its relegation to Serie B in 2006 for its part in the calciopoli match-fixing scandal. This season the club was accused of lacking leadership and quality.

"I've won some hard challenges and it isn't easy, but it has allowed me to be considered by a big club," Del Neri said. "I know full well that we need a lot of quality to achieve our aims. But we need continuity and if we achieve that we might be able to reach our goals earlier."

Del Neri made his name at the start of the decade with Chievo Verona. He helped the club into the Serie A for the first time in its history and guided the side into the UEFA Cup after its first season in Italy's topflight.

In 2004 he took over at FC Porto after Jose Mourinho left, but was sacked before the season began.
