Could Liverpool make Emre Can the new number 8?

Liverpool’s Emre Can has been suggested as a strong candidate for future captain for awhile now, and why not? He plays a commanding role in deeper midfield, allowing him the control player from further back. It’s obvious he’s a good player, with even more potential, and he could become world class in the next few years.

Emre is capable of defending well in that holding role, while creating attacks using some clever passing. We’ve seen signs of his distance shooting, and if that improves he’ll be a threat from range. His movement suits Jurgen Klopp’s tactics, and Emre appears to be a key player in the German managers plans.

So could Liverpool give Emre Can the number 8 shirt?

There’s previously been some debate on whether or not to retire the number 8 shirt, but could giving it to Emre Can end that? He’s already adored and appreciated, so surely it would make sense?

In my eyes, if the number 8 shirt isn’t retired (I don’t mind either way) it could add pressure to whoever takes it. If a new signing takes it, they’ll be judged against it by some fans. Giving it to Emre Can would remove that pressure, because we already know he’s good.

He seems like a player of enough quality to fill the shirt without worry. It would indicate our desire to keep Can, and would be fitting if he goes on to become captain.

I’d much rather a fan favourite take the shirt than a new signing who turns out to be a flop. Emre Can seems most likely to ascend into a captaincy role should his growth continue, so this could be a good move for Liverpool to make.

Would you give Emre Can the number 8 shirt, wait for a new signing, or retire it?
