Copa Libertadores Wrap, March 9
Uruguayan club Penarol defeated Ecuador's Liga de Quito 1-0 on Wednesday to move into first place in Group 8 of the Copa Libertadores.
Luis Aguiar scored the deciding goal in the 58th minute, driving a left-footed shot into the net following a well-placed corner.
Penarol, a five-time winner and nine-time finalist of the competition, improved to six points from three matches, with 2008 winner Liga de Quito staying on three points from three matches. Argentine clubs Godoy Cruz and Independiente have three points from two matches and play each other on Thursday.
In Group 2, Atletico Junior of Colombia defeated Oriente Petrolero of Bolivia 2-0. Junior has a perfect record with three matches and three victories. The Bolivians have lost their first three matches.
Victor Cortes gave the Colombians a 1-0 lead with a header in the 26th, and Luis Paez made it 2-0 just before the end of the first half. Juan Carlos Arce scored late in the second half for Oriente Petrolero.
In Group 7, Argentine club Estudiantes came from a goal down to defeat Paraguay's Guarani 2-1.
Pablo Caballero gave Guarani a 1-0 lead in the 44th on a penalty. But Estudiantes scored two goals early in the second half - Pablo Barrientos in the 51st and Leandro Gonzalez in the 54th - to put the match away.
Estudiantes have six points from three matches - one behind Brazil's Cruzeiro - and Guarani has lost its first three matches.
In Group 4, Caracas of Venezuela defeated Chile's Universidad Catolica 3-1. The victory moved the Venezuelans to the top of the group with six points from two matches. Catolica has four points from three games.
Luis Cabezas gave Caracas the lead in the 46th, Nelson Barahona added another three minutes later and Cabezas got his second to made it 3-0 in the 51st. Pablo Calandria got one back for Universidad Catolica in the 53rd.
