Charlie Davies diagnosed with cancer, now in remission

Charlie Davies has been diagnosed with cancer. Doctors told the New England Revolution forward that he had liposarcoma in the spring and he says that he is now in remission.

Davies has not played for the Revolution since April 27th, when he was subbed off with a right adductor strain. He returned to training on July 13, but did not play in any matches. The New England striker has just one goal in eight matches this season, a year after scoring 10 times.

Hard times are nothing new for Davies. He was once a rising star in the United States national team, featuring in the 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign for the Americans, but a fatal car accident left him with multiple fractures and internal injuries. Davies missed nearly 18 months following the accident. He was also open about the difficulties he and his wife Nina faced after his twin sons were born three months prematurely this spring.

A feature on Davies will air Sunday at 1:30 p.m. ET on FOX with an extended version available on FOXSports.com.
