Carlo confident in Blues squad
The Blues' January transfer policy was in danger of backfiring on Friday after their snubbed move for Torres was followed by Benfica pulling the plug on a deal for Luiz. Speaking shortly before the news about Luiz broke, Chelsea boss Ancelotti refused to be drawn on whether the club would make a fresh attempt to prise Torres from Anfield ahead of the close of the window at midnight on Monday. They also have less than three days to resurrect talks with Benfica over Luiz, having already obtained a work permit for him. However, there is now a very real prospect Chelsea will end January having not made a single addition to a squad which was responsible for the club's worst run in the league for almost 15 years when injuries struck towards the end of 2010. Having let regular bench-warmers Gael Kakuta and Patrick van Aanholt leave on loan this week, they now have just 19 fit outfield players who have experience of first-team football, many of them youngsters. Three senior men are due to return from the sidelines for the second half of the season but, with three fronts to fight on, another injury crisis could be hugely damaging. Yet, Ancelotti was defiant about the strength of his current playing pool. "It could be good enough, yes, obviously," said the Italian. "It's enough because we have to play with 11, not more. "We don't have a lot of games until the end of the season. "I hope to have 28 games." Ancelotti was also adamant splashing out a reported £35million on Torres and £26million on Luiz did not smack of desperation, insisting they would be signings for "the future". "It's not desperation because we have a fantastic squad," he said, insisting the double swoop was not related to Chelsea's recent run of one league win in nine. "This is not the reason because we are looking not just for this season. "We are looking for the future of this club." Asked why they had left it so late to bid for Torres, an increasingly irate Ancelotti bit back, saying: "I don't need to explain to you when we move." Despite saying on Monday night that Luiz was the only player he was chasing, Ancelotti claimed he was fully informed of the Torres bid. "When we try to do something, we will speak together," he said, insisting the club had not changed its policy of reining in their spending ahead of the upcoming UEFA Financial Fair Play Regulations. He added: "We will try to improve our squad so, for this reason, the club is doing this job." Ancelotti also reiterated his belief it had not been an error to let five established internationals leave last summer, saying: "We didn't do a mistake because, in these six months, we found a fantastic young player: (Josh) McEachran. "I hope that we will find other players. "We sent on loan two young players, Kakuta and Van Aanholt, and I hope that after the experience outside our club, they will come back with more experience and ready to play for us."
