Bundesliga newcomer Darmstadt signs defender Gyoergy Garics

DARMSTADT, Germany (AP) Promoted Darmstadt says it has signed Austria defender Gyoergy Garics, one day before the club marks its return to the Bundesliga after 33 years.

Darmstadt opens the new season at home against Hannover on Saturday.

Coach Dirk Schuster says Garics brings ''just the experience and quality we need in the Bundesliga.''

Garics has played for various clubs in Italy since 2006.

Darmstadt has a tiny budget compared to most Bundesliga clubs.
