Black handed Rovers role
Rovers have now confirmed his appointment to fill the number two position at Ewood Park, which was vacant following Paul Clement's departure to Paris Saint-Germain earlier this month.
Welcoming Black's appointment, Rovers boss Kean told the club's official website: "I am delighted that Eric has agreed to come on board.
"He is someone with extensive coaching experience at the highest level and I feel sure he will play a key role over the coming months."
Former Coventry and Motherwell manager Black left his post as Sunderland assistant boss following Steve Bruce's sacking last month.
The 48-year-old has been assistant manager with Birmingham City, Wigan Athletic and Sunderland.
He joins as Kean seeks to guide Rovers to Premier League safety this term.
