Birmingham beats Bolton 2-1 in Premier League

Birmingham moved out of the Premier League relegation zone after beating Bolton 2-1 on Saturday from goals by Kevin Phillips and Craig Gardner.

Phillips scored in the fourth minute and Gardner doubled the lead in the 59th as Bolton rose five places to move to 15th, two points above the drop zone.

Starting his first league match of the season, Phillips unleashed a shot from a corner to beat goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen. Gardner found the net with a strike that crashed in off the post.

Bolton striker Johan Elamder pulled a goal back in the 70th minute.

Birmingham's first league win since beating Stoke on Feb. 12 also avenged the team's loss to Bolton in the FA Cup quarterfinals three weeks ago.
