Best's European Cup medal sells for 156,000 pounds
The medal awarded to Manchester United great George Best when the team won the 1968 European Cup has been sold at auction for 156,000 pounds ($247,200).
British auctioneer Bonhams sold 13 medals earned by the Northern Ireland international for a total of 200,000 pounds ($317,000) on Wednesday.
It had estimated the value of the European Cup medal at 90,000-120,000 pounds ($142,600-190,200).
Best scored in Manchester United's 4-1 extra-time win over Benfica at Wembley.
He died in 2005 at 59 following decades of alcoholism. His sister will receive the proceeds of the medal sale.
