Bayern Munich fans receive prize from German Football Federation

FRANKFURT, Germany --

A group of Bayern Munich fans has received the German Football Federation's annual Julius Hirsch Prize, named after a Jewish player for Germany who perished in the Auschwitz concentration camp.

The Bayern group of supporters, known as the Schickeria, was honored for their choreographed banners and chants that recalled the life of Kurt Landauer, who escaped from the Dachau concentration camp and after World War II returned to become president of the club.

The award was presented on Tuesday by DFB president Wolfgang Niersbach, with Hirsch's grandson Andreas in attendance at the ceremony in Gelsenkirchen before the European Championship qualifier between Germany and Ireland.

The Schickeria is a group of Bayern supporters from the hardline `ultras' scene.
