Aubameyang confused by Toure's Player of the Year tirade

Borussia Dortmund forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has expressed his confusion over Yaya Toure 's reaction to his CAF Player of the Year award.

The Manchester City midfielder was hoping to be named Africa's leading player for a fifth consecutive year but was pipped to the prize by Aubameyang, who has been in fine goalscoring form in the Bundesliga.

Toure congratulated the 26-year-old but then labelled the voting "indecent", "pathetic", and as having brought "shame to Africa" - seemingly because Aubameyang's club exploits had been preferred to his successful captaincy of the Ivory Coast at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Speaking to Sport Bild, Aubameyang said: "I really don't know why he said that at all.

"I am not going to get angry about it and for me it is already an old story, gone. It simply does not interest me."

Of more immediate concern to Aubameyang is Dortmund's task of catching up with Bayern Munich, which will return to action with an eight-point lead at the top of the table when the Bundesliga resumes later this month.

"We will certainly not give up without a fight and all is not lost yet," he added. "We know that it will be very, very difficult to stop Bayern winning the league but nothing is impossible."
