Arsenal star Wilshere denies being involved in alleged assault

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has denied being involved in an alleged assault that occurred in London's West End in the early hours of Sunday morning.

On Monday, the Daily Mirror released footage that allegedly shows Wilshere speaking to police in the aftermath of an altercation.

Arsenal have confirmed a "fracas" did take place and Wilshere was present, but say the England international has told them that he was not involved.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "At 2.15am on Sunday, 3 April, police patrolling Coventry Street became aware of two groups of males involved in an altercation.

"Officers intervened and one man claimed he was assaulted. He did not require hospital treatment.

"There have been no arrests and inquiries continue. We will not comment on who may or may not have been involved."

Wilshere, along with the rest of the first-team squad, had a day off on Sunday, but he was due at the training ground on Monday.

He is yet to feature for Arsenal this season having suffered a hairline fracture of his left leg in September.
