Arsenal Should Be Praying For Chelsea To Utilize David Luiz

Arsenal has never had an easy time breaking into Chelsea’s defense, but with David Luiz in the middle, there is always a pretty good chance.

I wrote early today about how Arsenal’s struggles to break down Chelsea’s defense are not so coincidentally tied to Mesut Ozil’s inability to mount much of anything against the Blues as well. But give credit where it’s due. Chelsea has been a defensive stalwart in recent years, with the English duo of John Terry and Gary Cahill holding down the fort.

It can make things difficult. Even moreso when not even Olivier Giroud can manage to create space within the confines of that back four.

That being said, we are looking at a different Chelsea this time around. It’s a very aggressive Chelsea that attacks the ball and doesn’t merely sit back and absorb.

Still, with Terry and Cahill, there is always cause for concern. They know this Arsenal attack well and have dealt with it many times before.

I am fairly confident that given that combination, Alexis would be able to whittle through fairly effectively, but there are nagging doubts in my head.

Thankfully, those doubts may be put to rest with Antonio Conte’s squad choice.

We should be praying for David Luiz to be in that back four with Gary Cahill. It’s John Terry who always seems to be the main obstacle, so assuming the Blues utilize their new duo of Luiz and Cahill, the Gunners may be in the clear.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

The reason I prefer Luiz is simple – he’s not a defender. I’m still not sure why Chelsea dished out for him. He is an immensely talented footballer, but it’s easy to exploit his overzealous nature. He is far too often seen leading the attack and he is far too often overly agressive in defense.

Give us either one of those two faults and Ozil or (God willing) Xhaka will be able to pick out a long ball to Alexis. It’s the ideal situation.

Luiz has not been terrible thus far into his young season, but I will use the same argument I used for Diego Costa. The competition has not been that great. He deserves credit for a decent enough game against Liverpool, but even then the Reds weren’t fully staffed.

Arsenal can and will exploit David Luiz. Alexis has a long history of doing so and I’m sure he is happy to see him back in England.
