Arsenal says Gallas likely to miss rest of season

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger predicted defender William Gallas will be sidelined for the rest of the Premier League season with a calf muscle injury that jeopardizes his trip to the World Cup with France.

The defender was carried off the field during Wednesday's 2-2 tie against Barcelona in the Champions League after returning from a similar injury.

Wenger, who also lost Cesc Fabregas and Andrei Arshavin to injuries in the same game, thinks Gallas will be out for five weeks.

``It was a gamble which did not pay off. and was a mistake, yes,'' Wenger said.

Wenger said Gallas return for the Champions League final on May 22, if Arsenal gets there.

France coach Raymond Domenech was quoted in Friday's editions of L'Equipe as saying those not in a position to play by May 18 will not go to South Africa.
