Argentine League Roundup, Oct. 24

Huracan reduced San Lorenzo's chances of moving closer to the top of the Argentina Apertura standings, winning 3-0 at home on Sunday in one of the country's so-called "classicos."

Carlos Quintana scored in the 16th, Facundo Quiroga added another in the 51st, and Uruguayan Diego Rodriguez capped the scoring with a penalty in the 71st.

In another classico on Sunday, Boca Juniors and Independiente played to a 0-0 draw. Boca has 17 points, sputtering near the middle of the table, and Independiente has 10, just a few notches off the bottom of the standings. In other matches Sunday, Tigre defeated Olimpo and Newell's won 1-0 against Gimnasia.

At least 13 Boca fans picked up minor injuries in confrontations with police after the match at Independiente's stadium. Reports said the fans were allowed to use only a lone exit from the stadium, prompting pushing and shoving with police.

In a match between two lowly-ranked teams, Tigre defeated Olimpo 3-2, improving Tigre to 15 points and leaving newly promoted Olimpo with only nine points from 12 matches. Denis Stracqualursi, Martin Galmarini and Diego Castano scored for Tigre, while Olimpo's goals were by Julio Furch and Nestor Bareiro.

In Sunday's final match, Newell improved to 21 points and moved into fourth place in the standings behind Arsenal.

Estudiantes held the top spot in the Apertura tournament with 27 points following a 0-0 draw on Friday against No. 2 club Velez. Velez has 24 and Arsenal is in third with 23 points despite a 3-1 loss on Friday to Godoy Cruz.

On Saturday, River Plate's struggles continued as it salvaged a 1-1 draw with Racing Club on a second-half goal by substitute Diego Buonanotte. River has 18 points and Racing has 17.

Buonanotte is still recovering from being the driver in a car crash 10 months ago that killed three of his childhood friends.

"The draw is not much, but it's something," Buonanotte said.

River is now winless in six straight matches. New River Plate coach Angel Cappa is coming under increasing criticism for his team selection and his inability to bring enough talent into the famous Buenos Aires club. River is also just clear of the relegation zone. Relegation in Argentina is decided on the results over three seasons.
