Antonio & Martinez Scoop Monthly Awards

Like most clubs, West Ham have voted for their monthly awards for August. The awards for Player of the month and goal of the month are good achievements for players, and as they are voted for by the fans it is something that the players love to win.

Player of The Month

After one win and two defeats in August there was a mixed bag to go from in the August awards. Very few players had shown much in the games, but there were a few notable performances.

New boy Arthur Masuaku had shown that he could fill in for Cresswell will aplomb. He’d been strong in defence and shown potential going forward. However when conceding 5 goals in 3 games can a defender really get player of the month? Masuaku finished to second in the vote, but has shown his fan love.

The winner was Michail Antonio, the only West Ham player to leave with any real credit. It was a big change over August for the England player, who started the month by giving away a penalty and being substituted against Chelsea but followed up with two goals in two games against Bournemouth and Manchester City.

There was certainly no-one stealing his title, hopefully it won’t be so simple this month.

    Goal of The Month

With the player of the month requiring sustained performances, this award is a little different. All it requires is a moment of brilliance, or a single glorious run in the middle of something average to win it. However that cannot be said of Martinez.

Since signing for West Ham he has continued to score almost at will, and it is the pick of his efforts that wins the award for August. With the ball played into him on the edge of the box, the Spaniard takes it sharply by spinning and send the ball straight into the top corner over the keeper.

If this is a sign of things to come, we’ve got a gem of a striker on our hands. It’s a shame it came during a loss, but it scoops August’s Goal of The Month Award. Hopefully the first of many for Martinez!
