Alderweireld wants Batshuayi to join him at Tottenham

Toby Alderweireld hopes Belgium team-mate Michy Batshuayi will join him at Tottenham next season.

Batshuayi, who scored 17 goals in Ligue 1 last season, is reportedly a target for Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino.

However, the highly coveted Marseille striker has also been linked with Crystal Palace and West Ham, while Chelsea are also said to have entered the bidding war for the 22-year-old.

"Do I hope Batshuayi comes to Tottenham? Yes of course," said Spurs defender Alderweireld. "He has a lot of qualities.

"The problem of course is that at that position Tottenham already has Harry Kane, while there is a lot of interest for Batshuayi [from other clubs]."

Meanwhile, Alderweireld, whose Belgium side play Wales for a place in the semi-finals of Euro 2016 on Friday, has spoken out about England's embarrassing exit from Euro 2016.

The 27-year-old believes a lack of winter break during the Premier League season may have contributed to their humiliating defeat to Iceland in the last 16 of the tournament on Monday.

"Who am I, of course, to judge them, but the Premier League must urgently think about a rest period in a European Championship or World Cup year," he said.

"We are working day by day for a year. When the other leagues take a winter break, we just gear up.

"That creeps into your clothes and translates into the elimination of England."
