12 hurt in Macedonia football clashes

Macedonian police say 12 people were injured and three were detained following clashes before a Champions League qualifying match between local club Vardar and Steaua Bucharest.

Authorities only announced the injuries Wednesday, a day after the clashes late Tuesday in the capital Skopje when several hundred local fans clashed with riot police while trying to force their way into the Filip II National Arena. Seven police officers were injured, along with two stadium security officials and three fans, police said. The rioters hurled rocks and petrol bombs at police, who responded with tear gas and flash grenades.

Steaua won the match 2-1, advancing 5-1 on aggregate.
