As long as the Rangers do not trade Michael Young by Saturday, the club expects him to report for the start of spring training on Sunday.

"We're preparing for Michael to be on the club," general manager Jon Daniels told MLB.com on Wednesday. "We have to prepare for him to be on the club. In all our meetings, everything we're setting up, the workouts and stuff, are based on that. We're planning on him being on the team."

Young, who was the Rangers' starting third baseman before Adrian Beltre was signed in early January, seemed like he would adapt to the new role as designated hitter and super utility infielder, backing up at first, second, third and short.

While speaking with reporters at the Rangers Fan Fest on Jan. 23, Young said: "There are new challenges in this game all the time around the corner. I'm not going to let something like this get in the way of where I want to be as a player when my career ends.
