The Milwaukee Brewers are reshaping their franchise with an injection of youth and prospects.

Every Thursday for the rest of the season, FOX Sports Wisconsin will take a closer look at some specific young players -- as well as noting others who might be stepping up -- measuring, highlighting and evaluating their progress. Please note the glossary of advanced stats at the bottom of the story.

Keon Broxton (age 25/Triple-A)

Notable: Recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs, where he was batting 301/390/583 with 7 HR and 15 SB, Broxton finally got his first major-league hit Wednesday -- on a bunt single.

 

Zach Davies (age 23)

Notable: Davies was knocked around a little bit thanks to serving up two home runs but his WHIP on the season continues to decrease. Righties are bating 253/322/430 against him bur lefties 356/433/627.

 

Ramon Flores (age 23)

Last week: 5 games, 12 PA, .300 BA, .333 OBP, .600 SLG, .933 OPS, 160 sOPS+, .500 BAbip

Season: 40 games, 103 PA, .205 BA, .301 OBP, .273 SLG, .574 OPS, 3 2B, 0 3B, 1 HR, 7 R, 9 RBI, 1 SB, 13 BB, 27 K, .274 BAbip, 57 OPS+, -0.2 WAR.

Notable: Recorded his first career stolen base on May 19 and hit his first major-league home run two days later.

 

Domingo Santana (age 23)

Season: 36 games, 133 PA, .239 BA, .353 OBP, .381 SLG, .734 OPS, 7 2B, 0 3B, 3 HR, 15 R, 12 RBI, 0 SB, 19 BB, 45 K, 97 OPS+, .369 BAbip, -0.6 WAR.

Notable: Was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right shoulder strain on May 19.

 

Jonathan Villar (age 25)

Last week: 5 games, 24 PA, 3 2B, 2 R, 3 RBI, 2 SB, 2 BB, 6 K, .333 BA, .375 OBP, .476 SLG, .851 OPS, 142 sOPS+, .438 BAbip

Notable: Has already established a career high in doubles and walks, despite playing in a career-low 44 games and with second-fewest plate appearances in a season.

Orlando Arcia (age 21/Triple-A)

Last week: 7 games, 30 AB, 9 H, 2 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 6 R, 5 RBI, 1 SB, 1 BB, 7 K, .300 BA.

Season: 40 games, 167 AB, .299 BA, .331 OBP, .425 SLG, .752 OPS, 3 2B, 3 3B, 4 HR, 24 R, 22 RBI, 6 SB, 9 BB, 26 K.

Notable: Arcia's 14-game hitting streak came to an end and he is 0 for 9 in Colorado Spring's last two games. He did manage to hit for the cycle over the week, however.

 

Trent Clark (age 19/Single-A)

Last week: 3 games, 9 AB, 2 H, 1 2B, 1 3B, 0 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K, 0 SB, .222 BA

Season: 12 games, 41 AB, .220 BA, .396 OBP, .416 SLG, .811 OPS, 6 2B, 1 3B, 0 HR, 7 R, 1 RBI, 0 SB, 12 BB, 15 K.

Notable: Clark was placed on the 7-day disabled list due to a hamstring strain.

 

Clint Coulter (age 22/Single-A)

Notable: Remains on disabled list at Brevard County due to right oblique injury.

 

Isan Diaz (age 19/Single-A)

Last week: 7 games, 27 AB, 5 H, 4 R, 1 RBI, 2 BB, 4 K, .185 BA.

Season: 44 games, 165 AB, .206 BA, .298 OBP, .309 SLG, .597 OPS, 8 2B, 0 3B, 3 HR, 18 R, 15 RBI, 2 SB, 18 BB, 44 K.

Notable: Went 2 for 4 with 2 runs on May 25, his first multiple-hit game since May 12 and first game scoring more than one run since April 13.

 

Josh Hader (age 22/Double-A)

Last week: 1 game (1 start), 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 5 K, 0.00 ERA.

Season: 9 games (9 starts), 1-1, 0.79 ERA, 45 2/3 IP, 1.01 WHIP, 30 H, 0 HR, 16 BB, 59 K, .192 OBA.

Notable: Has not allowed a run in five of his nine starts. Has allowed just one hit and one walk to a left-handed batter with 18 strikeouts.

 

Adrian Houser (age 23/Double-A)

Last week: 1 games (1 start), 0-0, 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 2 K, 1.50 ERA.

Season: 8 games (8 starts), 2-4, 6.38 ERA, 42 1/3 IP, 1.39 WHIP, 44 H, 3 HR, 15 BB, 33 K, .272 OBA.

Notable: Lefties batting .320 against Houser (and his WHIP is 1.92) but he's holding righties to a .230 clip (1.01 WHIP).

 

Jorge Lopez (age 23/Triple-A)

Last week: 2 games (2 stars), 1-1, 11 IP, 14 H, 10 R, 8 ER, 6 BB, 6 K, 6.54 ERA.

Season: 9 games (9 starts), 1-3, 6.25 ERA, 40 1/3 IP, 1.98 WHIP, 49 H, 1 HR, 31 BB, 32 K, .299 OBA

Notable: Topped 90 pitches for the first time this season (91) against Las Vegas on May 20, when he also picked up his first victory of the year.

 

Jacob Nottingham (age 21/Double-A)

Last week: 5 games, 21 AB, 6 H, 1 HR, 3 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 6 K, .286 BA.

Season: 38 games, 140 AB, .236 BA, .296 OBP, .336 SLG, .632 OPS, 2 2B, 0 3B, 4 HR, 16 R, 12 RBI, 3 SB, 10 BB, 35 K.

Notable: Sandwiched a three-strikeout game on May 23 with a pair of two-hit games May 22 and May 25. Is batting .299 in May.

 

Brett Phillips (Age 21/Double-A)

Notable: Returned to action May 19 after being on the disabled list. Had a three-hit game -- with a double and homer -- May 22 vs. Las Vegas.

 

Yadiel Rivera (age 24/Triple-A)

Last week: 7 games, 27 AB, 8 H, 2 3B, 4 R, 5 RBI, 2 BB, 7 K, 1 SB, .296 BA

Season: 9 games, 37 AB, .270 BA, .300 OBP, .378 SLG, .678 OPS, 0 2B, 2 3B, 0 HR, 5 R, 6 RBI, 1 SB, 2 BB, 9 K.

Notable: Tripled in back-to-back games May 19-20, going 7 for 9 with 3 runs and 4 RBI in the two contests.

A glossary of some of the advanced statistics used:

OPS: On base percentage + slugging percentage

OPS+: OPS compared to league average of 100, adjusted to the player's ballpark

sOPS+: OPS for the split (in our case the last 7 days) compared to the league's split OPS (100 being average).

BAbip: Batting average on balls in play.

WHIP: Walks plus hits divided by innings pitched.

ERA+: ERA compared to league average of 100, adjusted to the player's ballpark

FIP: Fielding Independent Pitching. Measures a pitcher's effectiveness at presenting home runs, walks and hit by pitches while causing strikeouts. The MLB average FIP is the same as the MLB average ERA.

WAR: Wins Above Replacement value. Represents the number of wins the player added to the team above what a replacement player would add (we are using WAR from baseball-reference.com).
