Witten's career in Dallas once in jeopardy due to hot dog?

Now entering his 11th season, it is hard to imagine Jason Witten ever doubted his spot on the Dallas Cowboys roster.

He may have had a less-than-memorable start after being drafted in the third round at No. 69 in the 2003 NFL Draft and only recorded one touchdown his rookie season, but his career took off not to long after.

So, apparently, all it took was an ill-timed hot dog break to put the tight end's career in perspective.

In a speech Thursday for the 2013 Advocare V100 Independence Bowl kickoff, Witten recalled a time in his third season when then-coach Bill Parcells yelled at him for taking a hot dog break during a preseason game against the Saints.

"It was raining, and I had played most of the first half, catching a touchdown pass, and we were beating the Saints pretty good," Witten said, via USA TODAY Sports. "I figured I was finished at halftime, because starters usually didn't play that much in preseason games. I walked under the stadium and saw the most beautiful hotdog you've ever seen. I dressed it all up with mustard, and ketchup and relish — then I was in mid-bite when coach (Bill) Parcells walked in.

"I felt about this big," he said spreading two giant fingers. "I didn't figure I'd play another game as a Cowboy."

Thankfully, no additional punishment came down on Witten besides the initial tongue lashing and he was able to go on and record the most receptions in Dallas history with 806 and rank third all-time among NFL tight ends in receiving yards with 8,948.
