Wings upset with non-call on Ducks' game-winning goal

DETROIT -- The Red Wings didn't like the Anaheim Ducks' game-winning goal, but there's nothing they can do about it now.

Ducks forward Ryan Getzlaf, who had already scored a goal in the game, came into the Wings' zone and appeared to hook his stick around the midsection of Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall.

Kronwall fell and then Getzlaf had an easy path to the net, scoring with 23.6 seconds left in regulation for a 3-2 win.

"I think they got away with one," Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg said.

"I don't think Kronner goes down without anything there. In that kind of moment in the game, I think it should have been something. I haven't seen a replay yet so we'll see but obviously you have two refs there and neither of them saw anything. Maybe it's not a penalty."

Wings coach Mike Babcock agreed with Zetterberg's assessment of the non-call.

"That's what we got TV for, we rewind it nine times, everyone knows," Babcock said. "The referees don't try to make mistakes, they made a mistake, we should have been on the power play in overtime at worst case."

Naturally, Getzlaf saw things a little differently.

"Just one of those plays where the puck turned up and I was able to take it to the net," Getzlaf said. "I closed my eyes and put it upstairs."

As always, Kronwall was unwilling to blame anyone but himself.

"Initially I thought it was his stick on my hands but again, everything happened so fast," Kronwall said. "Regardless, though, I can't let that happen."

Kronwall said when it first happened, he thought it was a penalty.

"I haven't seen the replay but any way you look at it I can't let that happen," Kronwall said. "I can't get beat like that. Penalty or not, whether they got away with one or not, any way you look at it it's a long season. The referee is just trying to do his best."

The Wings were disappointed in the non-call and in the loss, but not generally with the way they played.

"I thought we played well enough to find a way to at least get a point, if not two," Babcock said. "It's just one of those things that happen. Over the year, we're gonna get a break."
