Wings lose Howard after one period

DETROIT -- Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard had to leave after just one period Friday.

After making eight saves on nine shots against the New York Islanders, Howard did not return for the second period.

The Wings announced that Howard had a lower-body injury and was being taken out as a precaution.

Petr Mrazek replaced Howard.
