Will Ferrell on MLB spring training: 'There were moments that were terrifying'
Five days after his whirlwind spring training trip through MLB's Cactus League on March 12, charitable comic Will Ferrell visited "The Late Show with David Letterman" (on St. Patrick's Day, so naturally he's dressed like a leprechaun) to discuss the highs and lows of his adventure.
The 47-year-old Ferrell suited up for 10 teams and really did play nine positions (a tribute to Bert Campaneris, who managed the feat in a single game 50 years ago) and faced live pitching -- which sounds fun in theory, but less so when you're standing 60 feet, 6 inches from a guy firing fastballs in your direction.
"There were moments that were terrifying, I'm not going to lie to you," Ferrell said. "Trying to hit a 90 mile-per-hour fastball is next to impossible."
Ferrell explained that one of the lowlights of his tour was playing left field for the Arizona Diamondbacks, when his lackluster fielding contributed to a three-run rally. Worse, Ferrell got shunned by the D-Backs when his jokes about rallying back fell flat.
