Vikings cut 9, down to 80 players

The Minnesota Vikings are officially just five cuts away from their 75-man roster.

Quarterback Brad Sorensen, receivers Terrell Sinkfield and Marken Michel and tight end Brian Leonhardt were among the players waived on Tuesday, as well as defensive end Theiren Cockran, guard Sean Hickey, defensive end Claudell Louis, linebacker Terrance Plummer and guard Austin Shepherd.

The Vikings signed Sorensen on Aug. 20 after third-string quarterback Taylor Heinicke suffered a severed tendon in an off-the-field incident.

The move leaves starter Teddy Bridgewater, backup Shaun Hill and prospective third-stringer Joel Stave as the Vikings' quarterbacks moving forward.

Shepherd, the only player on the list drafted by the Vikings, was a seventh-round pick in 2015, while Cockran played for the Minnesota Gophers.

Shepherd, Leonhardt and Sinkfield are all Minnesota natives.
